Attaleia

Attaleia
Modern Antalya, situated in Pamphylia (q.v.) on the south coast of Asia Minor (qq.v.). Its harbor was an important center of trade that facilitated commerce and communication with Cyprus and Cilicia (qq.v.). The city was also capital of the theme of Kibyrrhaiotai (qq.v.) and had a major naval base. Its fortifications helped to keep it in Byzantine hands until the early 13th century, when, in 1207, it fell to the Seljuks (q.v.).
